LIGHTS - Guelph + London Shows

LightsWhen electro-rock sensation Lights first hit the music scene in 2008, she was just a songwriter with a synth and a dream. Her name may have been pluralized but Lights Poxleitner was a one-woman show who played and programmed her own instruments and sang her own lyrics.

This admirable self-reliance is rare in pop—in fact, Lights, signed a publishing deal at 16 and began writing songs for other artists—but after her 2008 self-titled debut EP (precocious enough to earn her a best new artist Juno) and gold-selling full-length follow-up The Listening, Lights was ready to open herself up to collaborations on her unexpectedly experimental album Siberia. And by choosing such leftfield collaborators as live electronic outfit Holy Fuck and rising rapper Shad, she also opened up her sound.

Arkells

Arkells at ElementsWe all met while living in Hamilton a ways back, and while weʼve been playing music together for five years, weʼve been playing softball together for six. Since we released Jackson Square, weʼve moved from residing primarily in Hamilton to residing primarily in our van. That explains why itʼs so messy. While touring the aforementioned Jackson Square, we have had the opportunity to play a smattering of shows, tours and festivals with lots of bands we love and never thought we would get to play with – Metric, Pearl Jam, Girl Talk, Tokyo Police Club, Them Crooked Vultures, Wintersleep, and the Starland Vocal Band. Because some of these shows took us places we donʼt normally go, we also had the opportunity to eat places weʼve never been before. Places like Pizza Uno, In-and-Out Burger (Timʼs favourite), Noodle Box (Maxʼs favourite), and a really good Cajun restaurant called Hot Belly Mamaʼs.

August Burns Red

August Burns RedAUGUST BURNS RED

“I definitely don't feel like we're the ‘new guys’ in the scene anymore. We have our sound figured out at this point,” says
AUGUST BURNS RED guitarist JB Brubaker. “But it was time to break some rules.”

Since the release of AUGUST BURNS RED’s 2009 breakout album, Constellations – which landed the metal juggernauts at #24 on the Billboard 200 – the Lancaster, PA-based genre giants have found themselves in some rather unexpected places. From the cover of Alternative Press to Fox’s “American Dad,” from the sands of Dubai to the Warped Tour, from Japan to Australia to South America, AUGUST BURNS RED crisscrossed the globe time and again on the road to the top of the hard rock heap.

When it came time to record their fourth full-length album, Leveler, ABR could have played it safe, could have simply cashed in on their previous success by making Constellations II. Instead, after eight years and a quarter of a million albums sold, AUGUST BURNS RED scrapped the old game plan and followed their sound where it led them. The direction, as it turns out, was both forward and backward. On Leveler, the band recaptured the hungry, ferocious heaviness of their earlier albums, and at the same time bravely indulged some of the more creative impulses they had previously stifled. The breathtaking result is nothing short of a game-changer.
